Our Story – Made with Purpose, Built to Last

At Bashers Footwear, we believe great shoes should do more than just look good. They should feel good, be made to last, and have a story worth telling.

Bashers was born from a shared vision between Voden Wearne and our long-standing manufacturing partner, Hopewell Footwear. Together, we wanted to create something meaningful: a range of quality barefoot footwear that combines comfort, craftsmanship and South African heritage, while supporting the people and skills behind every pair.

A Passion for Footwear, A Purpose Beyond Shoes

Voden has spent more than 23 years in the footwear industry, working closely with local manufacturers and suppliers, including Hopewell Footwear. Over the years, he has developed an in-depth understanding of what goes into making a great shoe, from selecting the right leathers to sourcing quality components and developing footwear for brands across Africa and internationally.

But Bashers became personal for another reason.

Having undergone two hip replacements before the age of 40, followed by major back surgery during Covid, Voden began looking more closely at ways to improve comfort and movement in everyday life. This journey led him to barefoot footwear and its philosophy of allowing the feet to move more naturally.

It sparked an idea: why not combine the benefits of barefoot design with the quality materials, practical durability and traditional craftsmanship that South African footwear is known for?

And so, Bashers began to take shape.

We wanted Bashers to be different. Not just another footwear brand, but one that stays true to where it comes from.

Our shoes bring together the barefoot philosophy and the traditional South African stitch-down construction, creating footwear designed for natural movement, everyday adventures and life outdoors.

We spent two years developing, testing and refining our designs before launching Bashers. Every detail mattered. We wanted to get the feel right, the fit right, and the quality right, without losing sight of what makes a great pair of shoes practical and accessible.

The result is a range of barefoot footwear that reflects our belief that good design doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to work, feel right and be made with care.

Our partnership with Hopewell Footwear is built on a shared commitment to keeping local manufacturing, skilled workers and South African suppliers moving forward. By developing our own footwear range, we are helping create a more sustainable future for the factory and the people who make our shoes.

Hopewell has a proud 57-year history, with the fourth generation now working within the business. That's decades of knowledge, experience and craftsmanship passed from one generation to the next.

We believe that kind of heritage is worth protecting.

Where possible, we incorporate quality local components and work with suppliers who share our values. It's our way of supporting the industry, preserving valuable skills and ensuring that traditional shoemaking continues to have a place in the future.
